How can I lift my baby’s knees back up when carrying them on my back with a wrap?
Sometimes Baby tenses up a little while being settled into the wrap, and loses their seat as a result. It’s important to invite them to sit back down at every step of the back carry setup, explaining how important their cooperation is and gently bouncing a little.
A few tips to help keep that deep seated squat position:
- Put them on your back in a baluchon carry with the fabric between the legs — the knees will already be well positioned.
- Don’t lean too far forward. Otherwise, the child may feel dizzy and try to compensate by straightening up and pushing with their hands. Straighten up and look toward the horizon while getting set up.
- Always hold the child by their base to keep them clinging on during setup. Gently bounce.
- Hold under the soles of the feet, give a little slack, straighten up, lift the knees back up.
- There are also more sensitive phases. Around the age when walking is being discovered, Baby’s priority is to explore space, balance, and upright posture on their own. They’ll be less cooperative, and babywearing will interest them if it’s useful to them (discovering places they can’t access on their own, resting, etc.).
